Do independent women exist?

In 2001 Destiny’s Child brought us Survivor, and independent women stood up to be accounted for. We wanted our own jewellery, our own cars, and our own houses. We wanted to be in complete control of our destinies and no man could stop us.

Was this all BS?

Lately I’ve realised that it probably is. Some women want to be financially independent, but complain if a man doesn’t open a car door for them. Some women proclaim to WANT a man but not NEED one, but then they need him to pay on their dates. Some women don’t want to be told what to do, but then rely on a man to wear a condom. Some women don’t want to be judged on their looks, but say this whilst flashing their best ASSets.

Either you’re independent or you’re not. If you want to be treated equally then you shouldn’t be able to pick and choose when this happens, because men definitely can’t. They’re always expected to go to work, always expected to pay for protection even though sex (usually) involves another person, is dumped if they share the cost of a date, and so much more. Is that equality?

Can you choose when to be ‘equal’?

It even goes men versus women. You might not want to be judged for being non-white, homosexual, disabled, etc but if you stood to gain something for being ‘different’ from a ‘white, heterosexual male’, would you let being equal slide…?

Instead of saying, “I’m an independent woman” maybe we should be saying, “Yeah, I’m an independent woman…when I feel like it.”

    Lmao @ ‘…I’m an independent woman..when I want to be…’

I know some family members like this lol.

And yeah I agree with you, but not everyone can be indepent overnight. Some are Independents-in-training lol. They want to be, but they’re just not quite there.

And a chick independ or dependent shouldn’t at no point depend on the guy to provide the protection. Its not hard to make sure you always have one in ur purse or wallet ladies.

Exactly. The cost of buying a condom/ pills is nothing in comparison to the money needed to raise a child into an adult.

Independent Women and Survivor became bullshyt once they released Cater to You.

I loved Independent Women so freaking much! And the video!

DC seemed more independent girl power, but Beyonce as a solo act is all about one-man, but about a man and that doesn’t sit too well…especially after coming from an era she created of songs uplifting women to be strong on their own.

That transformed into, “I got my man now and I’ll be ringing the alarm if he don’t react when I put my freakum dress on or be his suga mama and rock chinchilla coats for him…………………….”

I really hated that B’Day album.

And no one is ever wholly independent. We are human beings after all. Gonna have to depend on someone within some context be it big or small, mental or physical because that is just the nature of ‘us’. We are not solitary creatures.

Beyonce knows this. She’s standing at the ready to ‘ring the alarm’ on Jay any minute. LOL
